Advocate for a health system view on medicines and for bringing the complex issue of pharmaceuticals in the health systems research debate. Medicines are an important element of every health system: a corner stone of UHC, the highest portion of OOPE, unavoidable in quality of care, an instrument of health workers performance and the primary purpose of care seeking for the majority of patients. Why are they hidden or implicit, instead of an explicit focus of health systems strengthening debate? Maryam will keep asking the question until the answer is in every discussion.

Maryam is one of the very few giving a voice to curbing the gab to medicines access and health systems research and health services delivery. She challenges us to see that equity and equal access to medicines plays a very vital role in achieving an equitable access to health care for all.

Maryam has been a friend and colleague for too many years for me to care to remember. In all those years, I have noticed her passion and zest for the her work in global public health and in particular for strengthening health systems or components of it. She is one of the few people that can talk knowledgable and in depth about the varied nuances of the health system components and in particular role of medicines and technologies.
