Social media is important in pandemic responses since social media has tremendous penetration and affordability which makes it possible to reach out to even those who can't afford or don't have access to traditional media options.
Second wave of COVID was devastating in India. Our team reached out to those who didn’t have access to medical help by using social media & digital tools in following three key areas:
1. Medical consultation: We had setup COVID-19 Public Health Helpline - where anyone can either use WhatsApp or call the helpline number to seek help. We arranged video consultation of patients with the doctors. Our team available 24x7 to help the patients. Our team of doctors comprised of eminent doctors from India and abroad who volunteered their time and energy in helping those in need.
2. Medical Equipment & Medicines: We made sure all the critical medical equipment required for detection (pulse oximeter, thermometer) and treatment (medicines, oxygen cylinders and oxygen concentrators) were accessible to those who could not afford it in urban and rural areas in Uttar Pradesh. We had procured pulse oximeters, thermometers and oxygen cylinders and placed them strategically to serve the maximum number of people with the limited resources. Since oxygen concentrators were very expensive, we had reached out for donations through social media.
3. Awareness: Our team of volunteers worked towards dispelling the misinformation regarding Covid that was prevalent in the underprivileged areas and educated the correct SOPs during the pandemic.
Our team comprised of renowned doctors, grassroots workers and coordinators who worked tirelessly to provide all the possible help and save lives. We are normal citizens who came together from disparate fields and decided to stand up to help and volunteered at the time of need.
