Transparency and trust are essential during a pandemic, but from the beginning I knew this would be a pandemic of inequality. Society is not equal, and there are many communities and groups who have been historically discriminated against or overlooked in different aspects of life, including health. Social media gave me a platform to connect to these groups (in terms of highlighting risks and protective behaviour), but also enabled me to highlight structural inequalities (and major risks) to decision-makers and national & local media. If newspapers/TV news took notice, the government paid attention.
