Fighting malaria in the Asia-Pacific region

Asia-Pacific countries are embarking on the realization of a historic commitment to eliminate malaria from the region by 2030. With the added threat of emerging artemisinin resistance, the need for regional malaria heroes is greater than ever.

This goal requires the coordinated actions of policy-makers and advocates, researchers, health workers and the whole of society. Join the Awards in recognizing regional malaria heroes, including these dedicated advocates:

  • Maxine Whittaker is a professor at the School of Public Health in Queensland, Australia. She has many roles in the fight against malaria, including as program director of AICEM and Co-secretary of APMEN. Those nominating her as a Malaria Hero point to her invaluable leadership and networking in the push for malaria elimination.

  • Lidija Stankovikj uses social media to raise awareness about the many social dimensions of sustainability. Her Twitter account often links malaria with other important issues, such as dengue, malnutrition, and health systems. Her silobusting approach to malaria and sustainability is something we need more of!

  • Jeffery Smith has over 20 years of experience in the fight against malaria, as well as HIV. He advocates a holistic, collaborative approach to combating disease. His presence on Twitter raises issues and stimulates dialogue on infectious diseases.

  • Sara Canavati is currently a research scientist at Mahidol University in Bangkok. She is passionate about finding solutions for a malaria-free world, and her inspiring and informative social media presence reflects that. Through Facebook and Twitter, Dr Canavati keeps the malaria community “together and…well-informed…truly an inspiration.”

Who else should be on this list? Take a look at these entrants, and then nominate some other great heroes!
