While working on the Social Media Awards, our team realized that the winners needed something more than a conventional trophy. We wanted to commemorate their passion and commitment with something unique. We wanted something that would reflect the diverse and inspiring stories we found among the hundreds of comments, as well as the stories they told us.
To this end, we commissioned Zahra Zainal to create a “portrait” of each of the six winners, and their fight against malaria. With us, she pored through the Social Media Awards site comments and social media profiles, as well as organizational information, articles, and whatever else we could find. From these details, she crafted a visual representation of their fight against malaria. Each winner will receive a framed and mounted print of their portrait.
Zahra is an artist and producer, based in Melbourne. We ran across her great work at the 2015 Global Ideas Forum, as she live-tweeted her amazing illustrated notes of the talks. Check out examples here and here. We were so impressed with Zahra’s work for the SMAs prizes, we felt like we had to share it here as well. Below, explore these unique pieces for a bird’s-eye-view of our malaria heroes. Click on the image to see a larger version.
