Dr. Corine Karema has dedicated all her efforts and carrier in her life to fight malaria in Rwanda, in Africa and globally.
As clinician and policymaker, she introduced different strategy of linking malaria interventions and health system interventions to have high impact on malaria reduction and elimination; the country has achieved some of the steepest declines in malaria incidence and mortality ever documented. She advocated and mobilized resources to provide support to the media for strengthening the public behavior change towards malaria prevention and early treatment.

As the clinician and policymaker who has coordinated Rwanda's response to malaria during the time when the country has achieved some of the steepest declines in malaria incidence and mortality ever documented, Dr. Corine Karema is richly deserving of this honor. Along with many other students and colleagues, I have learned a great deal from her relentless drive for excellence and equity, as well as her naturally inclusive and humble leadership style. Rwanda, and the world, are fortunate to count Dr. Karema as one of our most dedicated and experienced leaders in the fight against malaria.

Dr. Corrine is leading the Malaria Division for a while. As we all know, countries are facing financial crisis worldwide, resources to support programs are therefore being reconsidered considerably. Despite all these challenges, deaths due to Malaria in Rwanda are decreasing over years. This is in part due to Dr. Corrine's leadership and commitment.
