Bloom is an online, social community created to bring together staff, physicians, researchers,
volunteers, patients, families, communities and stakeholders in new ways. The Sisters who
founded Providence’s hospitals and residences were the original social networkers — they
would routinely go out into the community to ask for direction and feedback on the needs of
the people. Bloom continues that tradition in a modern form.
Providence’s leaders — those who are charged with making decisions on behalf of the
organization — use Bloom to harness the ideas, information, perspectives and the
benefit of others’ experience. Unlike some top‐down online forums, the leadership of
Providence intends to use Bloom’s discussion area as a true engagement platform where
comments and feedback submitted in real‐time will help to transparently improve care and the workplace
culture. As often as possible, they act on the questions based on audience reaction and the
top‐ranked ideas/comments. If a topic area leads to change, that will also be posted on the
home page of Bloom and shared through PHC’s other communication channels (i.e. PHC News),
creating a feedback loop. This “crowdsourcing” of ideas helps Providence generate a broader
range of ideas for innovation and positive change in a transparent and modern way.
