I wish to nominate Greg Irving for the individual Twitter category. Greg's an academic GP in England who is of the generation that understands that peer reviewed publications on their own aren’t going to cut it when it comes to changing the world. Greg is an avid Twitter user, with over 1500 followers. His tweets are on a wide range of health policy issues, always relevant and engaging. His impact on civil society is evidence by the wide range of followers that he has on Twitter. Although they include some academics, his followers come from all parts of society – NGOs, health care providers, researchers, lobby groups and from countries as widely spread as Turkey, Hong Kong, Australia, USA and Algeria. He’s an example of a clinical academic who truly understands the power of social media to increase the impact of a traditionally stuffy sector.

Greg is seriously impressive in his use of Twitter to reach out to an internationally diverse audience. His involvement in a number of strands of work in global health (including work with the WHO on health inequalities in lower and middle income countries and, within the UK, in introducing global health topics to the postgraduate medical curriculum) is brilliantly disseminated through his informative and timely use of Twitter.

Greg was part of the team that developed the RCGP social media highway code, a practical and encouraging guide for healthcare professionals and researchers who want to use social media and want to get most out of their online communication, whilst ensuring that they meet professional obligations and protect patients (www.rcgp.org.uk/social-media). At the launch of the highway code Greg co-ordinated a live online twitter debate that included healthcare professionals, academic and policy makers from around the world; a debate that trended number one on twitter for some time.

I've known Greg for couple of years, we have been working together in Vasco da Gama Movement-WONCA Europe working group for new and future General Practitioners. He is a very skilled social media user, professional and helpful. His open mind and knowledge are remarkable.
